Hi there
~this is my Artist Statement
Goop:
I like to make messy un-clean paintings and drawings. To take up time that I once saw as too precious to waste on something that was not earning me social status or money is sustaining for me. This is because, quite unsettling in hindsight, the word my suburban, privileged, and white hometown regularly said to differentiate right from wrong was “clean”.
Cherishing the privilege of problematic trash is what I call “Gooey” or “Goop”. I chose these words because they have two opposite meanings, while neither meaning is associated with “clean”. This is a symbol for the cognitive dissonance in all of my paintings. I reflect on times America has been obviously problematic trash toward female artists leading an untraditional lifestyle like myself. But at the same time, being born American and raised in Upper Arlington is an obvious lottery win privilege.
Overstimulations and layering to the point of nonsense, blurring the lines of recognition, "Gooey" incorporates countless layers of iconography, memes, pop culture, and personal imagery of my life. By using massive layering of kinetic energy, each thought is quickly included and cherished, equally as important as the rest to level harmful hierarchies and reject modern customs, expectations, and stereotypes.
Gooey America:
“Gooey America” is a moniker to describe my deceivingly un-earnest prescriptive work that satirically embraces modern stereotypes. Forms include a realistic framed suit-wearing portrait, store-bought magazines, flash tattoo binder, tattoo gun made of dust, or mailed holiday card. This is a lethargic and harmless display of me playing pretend. I find it easier to embrace an untraditional lifestyle by only conforming to traditional stereotypes by deeming them satirical.
~this is my Bio:
I was born and raised in Upper Arlington, Ohio and received a BFA with a concentration in painting from Kent State University. I currently maintain a painting and drawing practice in Columbus Ohio.
I like contemporary absurdism and semi-referential abstraction. I am also inspired by transgressive tattooing and the use of cadmium red as mockingly humorous instead of sexy and expensive. My favorite artists right now are Joseba Eskubi, George Rouy, Cecily Brown, Jasper Johns, Katherine Bernhardt, B0nezone, Simon Evans, tannerclarkfuckingsucks, Veronika Pausova, Petra Schott, iluvvvlife, uglyy_fruuit and Anna Uddenberg.
